The United Way of Denton County celebrated reaching its 2017 campaign goal, which raised $2.3 million, Saturday night at the new Embassy Suites by Hilton Denton Convention Center.
About 620 people were on hand to watch nine couples compete in the local "Dancing with Our Stars" competition, the evening’s entertainment coordinated by Gladys Keeton of Texas Woman’s University. Jordan McDowell and Keith Pierce earned the mirror ball trophy. In addition, Bill Patterson, owner and publisher of the Denton Record-Chronicle, accept the 2018 Dr. Bettye Myers Humanitarian Award.
Other awards went to Ready Rosie (Better Tomorrow Award), Peterbilt (Community Spirit Award), the Denton Housing Authority (LIVE UNITED Award), Orison Holdings (Creating Lasting Change Award), and the city of Lewisville (Advancing the Common Good Award)
Campaign chair Lyle Dresher gave the Chairman’s Choice Award to Merki & Associates, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital and First State Bank.
A number of individuals and families who gave $10,000 or more to the campaign this year were also honored, including Rob & Kathy Seay, Dr. Carine Feyten & Chad Wick, Ellen and David Painter, Zach and Monica Glenn, Cheryl and Joe Hutchison, the Charldean Newell Estate, the Patterson family, Ernie and Barbara McCraw, Dr. Bettye Myers, and Mark Merki.
